We’ve both been super busy lately with work, kids baseball (7 games last weekend!), and family events, but we managed to make a little progress in our laundry room and mudroom. We installed some shelves over our DIY laundry countertop, and put some new flooring down for our in-progress mudroom closet.

Laundry Shelves

First, we painted and installed 1×2 cleats at the heights we wanted for the shelves. We cut plywood to size for the shelves, and attached a piece of 1×2 to the front of each shelf for a cleaner look. We painted the shelves and trim, and nailed the shelves down onto the cleats. Easy and cheap!

A New Laundry Cabinet

We’ve been showing you the space over our dryer lately, but we’ve also been doing a little work above the washing machine, too. Yes, that’s right, our washer and dryer are on opposite sides of the laundry room. Don’t ask me why, it was that way when we bought the house. 🙂

We installed a simple, white cabinet over the washing machine. The cabinet was in-stock at Lowe’s, and happened to be a good size for the space, so it was easy to go pick it up and hang it up the same day. Plus, things are now so much cleaner looking (if you ignore that large basket full of ironing that I’m behind on). A little gray paint, and a new white light switch, and that corner will be done!

Mudroom Closet Flooring

We are in the process of converting a utility closet into a mudroom closet. We had to fix the subfloor in the mudroom closet area because it was uneven and had big holes in it after removing the water heater and furnace.

Next, we installed some peel-and-stick vinyl floor tiles that we bought from Lowe’s. The tiles are so easy to install, and look fantastic! In fact, we like the look of the flooring so much that we are thinking we will re-floor the entire laundry space and powder room!

Now that the flooring is done, we can start work on installing our mudroom bench, and putting up some wall planks. The wall planks will save us from having to do any drywall or texturing in our mudroom closet. Plus, I love the look of planked walls, so it’s a win-win.

It’s amazing how a few simple changes can really improve a space!
