It’s the most wonderful time of the year…Halloween, of course!  Those of you who know me know that I LOVE Halloween.  It’s my Holiday, and I spend the entire month of October making Halloween-related stuff.

Pottery Barn always has great Halloween items in their Fall catalog, and this year was no exception.  I saw some really cute chalkboard tombstones that I liked, but the price…yikes!!!  They are currently on-sale for $95 (down from $110) each!

Aren’t they cute? But so pricey! So, I decided it couldn’t be very hard to make my own inexpensive version. Here’s what I did.

Step 1 – Materials

I took a trip to Michael’s and bought a two-pack of black foam board for $8.99.  There is chalkboard foam board that you can buy, as well, but it’s more expensive at $12.99 for two, and it is white on the inside and back side.  The black foam board is cheaper, black throughout, and works just fine as a chalk surface.

Step 2 – Cutting the Tombstones

I traced out the shape of the tombstone free-hand, and then used an Exacto knife to cut it out. If you don’t have one, you could use a box cutter from a hardware store. I just wouldn’t recommend using scissors, as they could bend the board as you cut out your shape.

Step 3: Decorating the Tombstones

This is the fun part – where you can get really creative with your decorating and sayings! I recommend using a white chalk pen to decorate your tombstones. The chalk pens are easier to use, and won’t wipe off or smear easily. You could also use some plain white chalk, as well, but you might have more trouble with the chalk rubbing off.

The Pottery Barn versions are beautiful, and made of wood, so they are sure to last a lifetime.  But, if you are on a budget like me, you just can’t beat making two of your own chalkboard tombstones for only $8.99!
