cof-fered cei-ling(noun) a series of sunken panels in the shape of a rectangle, octagon or square in a ceiling.

How many times have you glanced up at your ceiling and thought, “it needs a little something?” OK, so most of you probably will say, “never.” But, if you are anything like me, you are always looking for ways to add some character to a room. We have a beautiful living room with a great big, plain ceiling, and I’m thinking it would look fabulous with a coffered ceiling!

Talk about adding some drama to a living room! Love how the squares are painted a different color!

So pretty in this master bedroom! Love the way the wood and white coffers contrast – simply beautiful!

Not all coffered ceilings are “chunky, ” like in the previous pictures. Here’s an example I found of someone who put in a faux coffered ceiling similar to what I am thinking about doing. Isn’t it pretty?  I love the subtle sophistication it gives the room!

This next one is also gorgeous!  I just adore the way the ceiling and coffered trim are painted different colors.  It really makes the white coffered ceiling pop!

I found a great tutorial on This Old House for installing a faux coffered ceiling like the ones above. I still don’t know if this is going to happen at our house – still trying to convince the hubby and find the time to do such a big project!

So, what do you think? Are you lucky enough to have a coffered ceiling in your home?  Have you installed one, and can share some lessons learned?
