Today, I’m sharing my latest furniture makeover project. We’ve had this dull, unfinished chest of drawers in my son’s closet for years, just for some extra storage. But, once we installed some new closet systems in our current house, the unfinished chest of drawers became homeless. Never one to pass up a furniture makeover opportunity, I was certain I could breathe new life into this naked piece of furniture. It’s now a beautiful pink painted dresser…read on to see the transformation!

Before

Here is what the dresser looked like before I got started on the makeover. Whenever I’m going to makeover a piece of furniture, I like to think about what it’s lacking, and how to completely transform it. For this piece, which is actually called a ‘lingerie chest’, I thought it would be great to make it more feminine.

To spice things up a bit, I knew I wanted to add some legs to it. The overall shape is a little boring, and the plain bottom makes the entire piece look rather heavy. So, we added a bottom piece to match the top, and attached it to the bottom to the chest. Next, we added some cute little bun feet to make the dresser look more airy at the bottom.

Paint

Next, it was time for some pink paint. I painted it with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Arabesque. This is such a perfect pink color, and milk paint is an easy product to use for furniture makeovers. Plus, milk paint is non-toxic, so it’s great for painted furniture that will end up in a bedroom.

I really wanted this chest of drawers to have a girly look…probably because it looked so masculine to start with.  So, I decided to go a little crazy and add some hand-painted flowers, leaves, and even a couple of butterflies. The hand-painting was something of a stretch for me, because I’m usually more of a stencil girl. Maybe it was the art class I was taking that gave me a little more confidence to try some free-hand painting. I’ll admit…it was a little scary at first.

I used acrylic craft paint to paint on the flowers and two different shades of white. I started with the brighter white color to create the petals and stems of the flowers, and then layered on the darker white to give the flowers some dimension. The key was not to overthink it too much!

New Knobs

A girly chest of drawers needs a little bling, right? I added some beautiful Crystal Glass Knobs that I purchased from Amazon to finish it off. We used these same knobs in my daughter’s bathroom, and I just love them. The quality is superb, and the price is fantastic! Home Depot had similar knobs for over $4 each…I bought 6 of these on Amazon for under $14. Woohoo!

After

Lot’s of fun little changes really make a big difference! Here is our transformed pink painted dresser! She is going to add such a beautiful, feminine touch to someone’s room. Yes, she is going to be sold, although this lovely lady is going to be hard to part with. 🙂
